We are working with interested Delaware County high schools and their student organizations to challenge the student body to increase their percentage of seat belt use. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, teens have the highest fatality in motor vehicle crashes than any other age group. One reason is that they have lower safety belt use rates than adults. For more facts and statistics, click here.
Participating schools compete for a $500 grant (to go to the student organization of their choice) and a plaque to display in their school. The DCTMA conducts un-announced surveys at every high school in Delaware County as a way to track the number of students and passengers who wear their seat belts on their way to school. Another un-announced will be conducted in the Spring, after a series of outreach efforts are executed within the schools. The school’s student body that shows the most improved seat belt use rate wins the contest. The Challenge is run by the DCTMA, in conjunction with Delaware County Highway Safety (a division of Public Health Management Corporation) and local police.
