DELAWARE COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENT RECEIVES DCTMA SCHOLARSHIP

Delaware County Transportation Management Association (DCTMA) awarded its 3rd Annual Engineering Scholarship to Myrlie Taylor, a freshman studying Civil Engineering at Delaware County Community College.

DCTMA invited Ms. Taylor to the Municipalities Conference & Trade Show Thursday, April 12th at Drexelbrook Corporate Events Center to present her with the $1,000 scholarship. The DCTMA Engineering Committee reviewed applicants’ essays and transcripts, and felt the Upper Darby teen most deserving of the scholarship, given her perfect 4.0 GPA and career goals in engineering.

“My dream is to become a civil engineer, and to work for one of the biggest companies in Haiti, where my family is from,” she says. “I was there in 2010 when the catastrophic earthquake happened. Only two houses were left in my neighborhood. I was so traumatized, and it made me realize becoming a civil engineer will allow me to help others in my country to use good materials to construct solid buildings, bridges and damns. Also, I want to develop the transportation network there by creating highways and railways. In addition, you don’t see a lot of women engineers today. I am a young black American woman, and want to prove to other females they can do it too.”
